One of the many places I have always wanted to visit is Lake Louise in Alberta Canada. Ever since the very first time I heard of it I wanted to go. It was always on the radar but for "next year". When my daughter announced her wedding was to take place at this magical place, I realized I didn't even have an up-to-date passport.<br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="false" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/wolfbyte999/37598628301/in/album-72157686872772021/" title="IMG_1740"><img alt="IMG_1740" height="436" src="https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4456/37598628301_b695be8d11_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
I quickly reapplied and got it a few weeks before the trip. Flying across half the world away from South Florida, I arrived at the hotel I was staying (not this one unfortunately) in total darkness. It was not until the early morning, right after breakfast I was greeted with this view.<br />
<br />
<script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<a data-flickr-embed="false" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/wolfbyte999/23746241118/in/album-72157686872772021/" title="IMG_1683"><img alt="IMG_1683" height="480" src="https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4445/23746241118_1bec5ba0b2_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
Even though it was only October, there was a light snowfall. That did not stop me from a 2 mile walk right up to the glacier at the far side of the lake.<br />
<br />
<script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<a data-flickr-embed="false" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/wolfbyte999/37340154510/in/album-72157686872772021/" title="IMG_1722"><img alt="IMG_1722" height="480" src="https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4452/37340154510_32c148caca_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
I could not have imagined a more perfect wedding setting. If you look close you can even see the occasional snowflake in this photo. I have never in my life been to a more beautiful place and this day will probably always be my fondest memory.<br />
<br />
<script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<a data-flickr-embed="false" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/wolfbyte999/37549449876/in/album-72157686872772021/" title="IMG_1799"><img alt="IMG_1799" height="619" src="https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4443/37549449876_928d2fbac3_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>

<br />
For the rest of the photos <a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/wolfbyte999/albums/72157686872772021" target="_blank">[Click Here]</a>. Then do yourself a favor and see it in person. You won't be disappointed.<br />
<br />
I also have a nice little video from the wedding venue. I've been asked several times if it's CGI. Nope - It looked just like this in person.<br />

To be perfectly fair, I have never really visited Pigeon Forge. Only Dollywood. And that was just a few day trips. My first visit was in the late 80's so I was was quite amazed at the changes.<br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="false" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/wolfbyte999/36291808781/in/album-72157684755401843/" title="P1060094"><img alt="P1060094" height="360" src="https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4400/36291808781_4fbc17ae91_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
Since I'm a big believer in doing the most I can on my travels, I started off with booking a room in <span style="font-size: large;"><a href="http://www.guestreservations.com/the-margaritaville/booking">Margeritaville Island Hotel.</a></span> Was it expensive? - Oh hell yeah. Was it worth it? Absolutely! I booked very late and literally got the last room available so no discount but even so - I made the most of the amenities. The location alone had so much to do I could have just stayed right where I was. But what fun would that be.<br />
<br />
Just down the road was the <span style="font-size: large;"><a href="http://www.titanicpigeonforge.com/">Titanic Exhibit</a></span>. I've seen many a documentary and a famous movie about the Titanic but there was still so much to learn and see. I don't want to give much away but there is an Iceburg inside you can touch and a model of the seafloor where the Titanic rests that is as big as a tennis court. So many interactive exhibits you can spend a half a day experiencing them.<br />
<br />
<script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<a data-flickr-embed="false" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/wolfbyte999/36383119526/in/album-72157684755401843/" title="P1060083"><img alt="P1060083" height="360" src="https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4415/36383119526_ab903ee12b_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
In the same area as the hotel I found this playhouse. Since I had no idea it was there I had no reservation. To the rescue came the concierge at Margaritaville. Not only did she get us a ticket for the same day we rolled into town, she got us front row. No extra charge. Considering it was a full house I was more than a little impressed. Even more impressive was the show. Nothing like the Stampede - Dolly's other famous show - but I think I prefered this one.<br />
<br />
<script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<a data-flickr-embed="false" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/wolfbyte999/35593509034/in/album-72157684755401843/" title="P1060086"><img alt="P1060086" height="360" src="https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4409/35593509034_e285070d06_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
The main reason for this trip was to re-visit <span style="font-size: large;"><a href="https://www.dollywood.com/">Dollywood</a></span>. I am a huge roller coaster fan. My friend is not. Dollywood is the perfect place for us. There is a whole new crop of coasters since my last visit but also the grist mill, Gazillion Bubble show (a must see), and various bands that just pop up all thru the day. I even toured the <span style="font-size: large;"><a href="https://dollyparton.com/">Dolly Parton</a></span> Museum - first time. I am still blown away by her accomplishments and the way she gives back to her community.<br />
<br />
<script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<a data-flickr-embed="false" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/wolfbyte999/36259826812/in/album-72157684755401843/" title="P1060126"><img alt="P1060126" height="360" src="https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4437/36259826812_34f4db366e_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
I ran out of time in the day to enjoy this particular coaster. A return trip will be in my near future. I may need to schedule a two day trip to squeeze everything in.<br />
<br />
<script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<a data-flickr-embed="false" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/wolfbyte999/36428268975/in/album-72157684755401843/" title="P1060128"><img alt="P1060128" height="360" src="https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4395/36428268975_735a189a4e_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script><br />
<br />
I did many more things on this trip than I've written about. The<span style="font-size: large;"><a href="http://islandinpigeonforge.com/"> Island</a></span> has so much to see and do like the <span style="font-size: large;"><a href="http://islandinpigeonforge.com/play/the-great-smoky-mountain-wheel/">Great Smoky Mountain Wheel</a></span>, food, shops, bands, and a water and light show every night. I did as many as possible in a 3 day visit. Yep - I may need to book a full week next time.<br />

It was actually 1988. I remember not having enough cash to stay in town but a little up the road. Still within walking distance. I also remember how much I enjoyed my visit.<br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="false" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/wolfbyte999/36349182666/in/album-72157684564039481/" title="P1050961"><img alt="P1050961" height="480" src="https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4354/36349182666_e2bc807833_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
I've been back a few times over the years. Each trip with a new set of memories. This last visit I stayed at the Greystone Lodge right in the heart of town and right next to the Aquarium. I could not have picked a better place to stay.<br />
<br />
<script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<a data-flickr-embed="false" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/wolfbyte999/36393712195/in/album-72157684564039481/" title="P1050927"><img alt="P1050927" height="480" src="https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4400/36393712195_7900576255_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
The recent devastating fires did not diminish the experience. Memories are a funny thing though. Some of the places I remember so well were in different locations than I recollected, very run down, or completely missing. The roaring river through town was a mere trickle.<br />
<br />
<script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<a data-flickr-embed="false" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/wolfbyte999/36257064601/in/album-72157684564039481/" title="P1050977"><img alt="P1050977" height="501" src="https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4416/36257064601_0613fe25ce_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
On the other hand, there were so many new restaurants, attractions, and additions it was impossible to fit them all in as hard as I tried. The biggest surprise was the size of the Moonshine establishments. I'm not much of a drinker but I now own two bottles of Ole Smoky Moonshine. If I should run out, I discovered I can acquire this fine corn liquor at the local store in my home town.<br />
<br />
<script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<a data-flickr-embed="false" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/wolfbyte999/35997142570/in/album-72157684564039481/" title="P1050994"><img alt="P1050994" height="480" src="https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4356/35997142570_2b120802c5_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
Some of the attractions are what might be considered tourist traps but this haunted house was certainly worth the visit. There is another one that looked terrifying. I'll catch that one on the next visit.<br />
<br />
<script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<a data-flickr-embed="false" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/wolfbyte999/35557778584/in/album-72157684564039481/" title="P1060072"><img alt="P1060072" height="360" src="https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4399/35557778584_207631e908_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
The aquarium is well worth the admission price. I think it was actually the attraction I enjoyed the most and would definitely go again.<br />
<br />
<script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<a data-flickr-embed="false" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/wolfbyte999/36225411822/in/album-72157684564039481/" title="P1060064"><img alt="P1060064" height="360" src="https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4415/36225411822_844db26c04_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
Finding a meal was a challenge in that there are just too many great looking places to choose from. We decided to go with the coolness factor such as the stunning micro brew just off the main drag or the rooftop restaurant right on it.<br />
<br />
<script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<a data-flickr-embed="false" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/wolfbyte999/36225332362/in/album-72157684564039481/" title="P1060080"><img alt="P1060080" height="360" src="https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4376/36225332362_634a5c4291_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script><br />
<br />
Gatlinburg might not be everyone's idea of a getaway destination but it certainly is one of mine. I have a lot of years and a lot of memories invested. I like that it's mostly the same but that the old is making way for the new. My next visit I will start with the 4 wheeler trail ride and the roller coaster that I ran out of time for this visit.<br />

When my parents decided to move to Florida from Pennsylvania in 1978, I was in no way enthusiastic about it. Even though I've lived near the beach all these many years, I still feel more at home in the mountains.<br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="false" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/wolfbyte999/36253191431/in/album-72157684556581641/" title="DSC_8740"><img alt="DSC_8740" height="427" src="https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4354/36253191431_f10858d7f3_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
After I graduated college in 1982, I was well on my way to launching my career a few years later. I decided to take my parents on a little vacation. I was making some pretty good money, no college debt, and living at home so I was banking most of it. We traveled up Florida, Georgia, and went as far north as this park in North Carolina.<br />
<br />
<script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<a data-flickr-embed="false" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/wolfbyte999/35581912253/in/album-72157684556581641/" title="DSC_8750"><img alt="DSC_8750" height="427" src="https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4413/35581912253_107bbe50c2_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
While my parents took a break, I walked the entire two mile, two hour trail to the waterfall and back. That trip was etched in my mind for life. It was the most difficult hike I had done to that point and set a pattern for me that I still enjoy.<br />
<br />
<script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<a data-flickr-embed="false" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/wolfbyte999/35993267140/in/album-72157684556581641/" title="DSC_8763"><img alt="DSC_8763" height="427" src="https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4397/35993267140_de4d24c2be_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
I have come back every few years. Probably 10 times or so. This last time was a bit more difficult as 1) I'm older, and 2) the elevator was being repaired. Yes there is an elevator built right into the side of a mountain here.<br />
<br />
<script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<a data-flickr-embed="false" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/wolfbyte999/36344971586/in/album-72157684556581641/" title="DSC_8669"><img alt="DSC_8669" height="427" src="https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4411/36344971586_5d6fa13833_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
I often think of this place and one particular trip comes to mind. After a most devastating year with many personal failures, I basically got on a plane and took a one way trip to Asheville. Yes there was a time you could easily walk into the airport with a bag and just pick a destination and hop a plane. At the time of my departure I had no real plans of returning nor did I tell anyone I was going. I'm sure most people have days they feel like that. Not everyone acts upon them.<br />
<br />
<script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<a data-flickr-embed="false" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/wolfbyte999/35581351413/in/album-72157684556581641/" title="DSC_8717"><img alt="DSC_8717" height="427" src="https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4439/35581351413_c473089dc4_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
I remember driving up the steep, switch back road to the park so fast, the tires on the rental car were smoking. Try it. See if you can make it or sling yourself off the road. I remember I didn't really care either way. It was a wet, rainy, foggy day. The steps then were not nearly as even and regularly spaced as they are today and the trail was mostly uneven rock. Easy to twist an ankle or slip right over the side of a sheer drop. After sitting in the cafe here for a bit, I just took off up the stairs.<br />
<br />
<script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<a data-flickr-embed="false" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/wolfbyte999/35993007500/in/album-72157684556581641/" title="DSC_8693"><img alt="DSC_8693" height="427" src="https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4345/35993007500_35339a4756_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script><br />
<br />
Along the trail I passed a woman and her boyfriend. The woman had an artificial leg. I walked by them in total disbelief. My all fired hurry to get somewhere turned into a wait for them to catch up. There were at the time little rain shelters along the trail. It was raining. I took shelter and waited. In a few moments they arrived and sat with me. I asked what were they doing on this trail that I could barely navigate.<br />
<br />
Apparently she was in a car accident but loved this trail so much that she wanted to walk it again. A trail I was hardly noticing in my hurry to run away from my life. It was my first time meeting anyone superhuman enough to make this journey with little better than an old fashioned wooden leg. It was also the first time I ever saw in person this level of determination in the face of incredible odds against success.<br />
<br />
I am pretty sure this happened in 1994-1995. I remember why I was there, just not exactly when. I also remember how insignificant my problems and possibly my entire life became in the moments after I spoke with them. Not being very social at the time, I headed on. The trail is a loop so I did not come across them again. I did spend a very long time sitting perfectly still in a light rain memorizing with every possible sense a particularly scenic spot among the trees. I still to this day go to it in my head whenever life seems more than I care to handle. I will always remember the two people who I will never meet again and who will never know they were the biggest positive change in my life. I remember driving very carefully down the mountain and back to the airport. I also remember that when I got home I saw everything in my life differently. Even though the circumstances in my life never really changed all that much, I became a much happier and contented person.<br />

Not only has it been decades since I visited this park, it's also been months since I've posted in this blog. Time to catch up.<br />
<br />
My intention on this trip was to ride every roller coaster in the park. None of which I took photos of. That's because they make it very difficult to carry pretty much anything on the rides so wallet, keys, phone, camera all went into storage lockers most of the day.<br />

<br />
<br />
The roller coasters are incredibly fast, hugely varied, and put a tremendous strain on this old body of mine. All for pure enjoyment and thrill. Around noon or so I needed a slight break from being upside down at 60 miles an hour and decided to take in a show.<br />
<br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="false" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/wolfbyte999/35179860086/in/album-72157681967114713/" title="IMG_1419"><img alt="IMG_1419" height="467" src="https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4204/35179860086_49177291c8_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script><br />
<br />
I had forgotten how much I enjoyed these shows as a kid. I had also forgotten how much I enjoyed the penguin exhibit. Especially on a 90 degree day in the Florida sun. That is real ice and there is no glass between the birds and the visitors.<br />
<br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="false" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/wolfbyte999/34375758644/in/album-72157681967114713/" title="IMG_1445"><img alt="IMG_1445" height="438" src="https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4211/34375758644_71690503d0_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script><br />
<br />
The temperature shock was exactly what I needed to cool down a bit and finish my goal of riding every coaster in the park. A mission I accomplished but with no second rides on any of them. I will go back and visit again before my ticket runs out I'm sure. I am pretty sure I screamed for real on the Manta. Luckily - no video evidence.<br />
<br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="false" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/wolfbyte999/35054503842/in/album-72157681967114713/" title="IMG_1438"><img alt="IMG_1438" height="382" src="https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4211/35054503842_046b7ecae4_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script><br />
<br />
By far the best part of the day was enjoying a nice quiet meal with my special coaster buddy in a restaurant with a unique view. We were just a bit early for dinner when I snapped this photo but all seats were filled not long after.<br />
<br />
I did not take too many photos on this visit but for the rest <a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/wolfbyte999/albums/72157681967114713">[click here]</a>Bob Carlsonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00558512211379314724noreply@blogger.com07007 Sea World Dr, Orlando, FL 32821, USA28.4114555 -81.4617046999999840.37592349999999897 -122.77029869999998 56.4469875 -40.153110699999985tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6725175289178693214.post-31724574910405956442017-07-21T08:28:00.001-04:002017-07-21T08:28:08.376-04:00Dragonfly - Sometimes a cell phone is the only camera you need. <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

After my recent success capturing the Roosevelt Bridge at night after so many years, I thought I would try once more to capture a clear shot of the full moon. I left all the settings on the camera untouched and waited the almost two weeks to make the shot. The results were instantly disappointing. Nothing but a white blob. The thing I like about photography is the constant learning curve. The constant frustration can get old sometimes though. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj09fW8QQo66ymROoo1MA6NnkAzU9rTgGDrXL9bQjuGa8o-zgI_66UEF0_yi4dzdSwnc3UofgXTA4lmo2frDkCF6ofj7ch4eggPwLCwO1IxD02seGletIghuE97wLCbuD3LtrPgtaFWnVQ/s1600/DSC_1464.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="556" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj09fW8QQo66ymROoo1MA6NnkAzU9rTgGDrXL9bQjuGa8o-zgI_66UEF0_yi4dzdSwnc3UofgXTA4lmo2frDkCF6ofj7ch4eggPwLCwO1IxD02seGletIghuE97wLCbuD3LtrPgtaFWnVQ/s640/DSC_1464.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I am still and will likely always be an amateur photographer with expensive but mostly all used equipment. My $1,800.00 used lens, as good as it is, just can not seem to make this shot with my level of skill. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEidYicuX4qMpJ8-3DiQT3FmMyOIzytasb2l0xKdw5NezCPBa4nmRuK-jSq8Roj2VCaHkZ18e90s25E66MP69Ir0KBsePR1JFomnQubbKvkbnNej2E8zdahNl7LVnGx1tQuFxxOGSkbb67M/s1600/DSC_1467.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="537" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEidYicuX4qMpJ8-3DiQT3FmMyOIzytasb2l0xKdw5NezCPBa4nmRuK-jSq8Roj2VCaHkZ18e90s25E66MP69Ir0KBsePR1JFomnQubbKvkbnNej2E8zdahNl7LVnGx1tQuFxxOGSkbb67M/s640/DSC_1467.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
I had some luck previously with my $99.00 Vivitar Series 1 lens with the 2X converter giving me a full 1,000 MM. This is a fully manual lens. I set the camera to 400 ISO but the focus and aperture are manually set on the lens. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The one thing I had always done in the past was set the aperture wide open. For this shoot, I slowly closed the aperture, took a few shots, closed a bit more. I also used the remote to lift the mirror, count to 5, then take the shot. There was a pretty small shutter speed range I could use. If I had a bright smear or black screen, I knew I was out of the range. I took about 100 shots and only these two had the magic. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhXu6FmZNyCgbdTkEyJxCzWuvYFnUqO56QKDkh8U2Y-Nh0bic1CCX2VPy3UwQUekXC5kHw7Chut-YZjIBBwB8RxcNAKnJfMse4jOk6miJibjBPWfP53AI9Zjr-q_v6qbrv2A4_iDaCZBd4/s1600/IMG_1365.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhXu6FmZNyCgbdTkEyJxCzWuvYFnUqO56QKDkh8U2Y-Nh0bic1CCX2VPy3UwQUekXC5kHw7Chut-YZjIBBwB8RxcNAKnJfMse4jOk6miJibjBPWfP53AI9Zjr-q_v6qbrv2A4_iDaCZBd4/s320/IMG_1365.jpg" width="253" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Many years ago bought the wrong sized UV filter for one of my lenses. I just threw it in a junk drawer. A few months ago I found it and checked to see if it fit anything. It only fit this cheap lens so I put it on and took a few shots then put the lens back in the cabinet. I forgot to take it off for the moon shot. Seems pretty fortunate now. All of my moon photos to this point have always been less than crisp. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhLNyTD_PfAkkVGkVsezyr4C0DTLdoaNNVy8jSQViEQOU2q6WV1S9xfJ5QWLxQUoMEP6qEHzB5JIiMUVzM5ScyTNSamN5v7ge1srIKR26H4aBiGo80a-vX7KBlhEaa0WPCR2XdJ0aOYuTo/s1600/IMG_1366.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="285" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhLNyTD_PfAkkVGkVsezyr4C0DTLdoaNNVy8jSQViEQOU2q6WV1S9xfJ5QWLxQUoMEP6qEHzB5JIiMUVzM5ScyTNSamN5v7ge1srIKR26H4aBiGo80a-vX7KBlhEaa0WPCR2XdJ0aOYuTo/s320/IMG_1366.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I may not be a pro but I am persistent. I think I'll take this setup out in the daylight once in a while as well. </div>

I seen many photos from other photographers and it didn't seem that difficult. Three cameras, three lenses, 2 tripods, multiple combinations of equipment, dozens of settings, hours upon hours, and several locations later, I have finally captured a few photos worth sharing with the world.<br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="false" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/wolfbyte999/34289767026/in/album-72157681081518981/" title="DSC_1391"><img alt="DSC_1391" height="477" src="https://c1.staticflickr.com/3/2873/34289767026_6a6874cc56_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
The actual magical mix was, in the end, pretty basic. I was just missing one important element at a time to create awful photos, not worth the edit time. I could of course do better and I will keep trying but these three are pretty close to what I was aiming to achieve.<br />
<br />
<script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<a data-flickr-embed="false" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/wolfbyte999/33489010794/in/album-72157681081518981/" title="DSC_1418"><img alt="DSC_1418" height="427" src="https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4174/33489010794_691b52cd18_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
What's more important is I kept trying for years. Photography is one of those fun hobbies that is as frustrating as it is rewarding and always with more to learn.<br />

New town. New kayak. My inflatable Sea Eagle kayaks have served me well in my former home in South Florida but the waters in my new town seem a better fit for a hard sided kayak.<br />
<br />
A lot of the places I want to visit have either sharp oyster beds or sharp teeth just below the water. I bought my new kayak about 6 months ago when Sports Authority had a going out of business sale. As soon as I got it home, it seems, the algae blooms that got national attention began. It has been in the garage ever since. But finally I had a break in the weather, my schedule, and clear water.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgxWJrCw7ZsNsgCcbiRMy8AmeQ7uBCVxjePREc9mKQtF9QxdjYjai-DccuiKRyfnnuIFLOQ8zVqdEVG28u_8Mm8t8cu96x9EbLpNsqxWcMRbxiQ5rMVJhL7vlXnsxngNpLt1D43qPija1M/s1600/IMG_1254.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgxWJrCw7ZsNsgCcbiRMy8AmeQ7uBCVxjePREc9mKQtF9QxdjYjai-DccuiKRyfnnuIFLOQ8zVqdEVG28u_8Mm8t8cu96x9EbLpNsqxWcMRbxiQ5rMVJhL7vlXnsxngNpLt1D43qPija1M/s320/IMG_1254.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The first trick was to figure how to secure the kayak to the roof of the car. A few youtube tutorials helped with that. Next trick was to actually get it on the roof. I'm 6' 4" but so is my vehicle. Not only that, but I was about to take it on the highway just a few blocks from the house. Solid tie downs seemed appropriate for my first ever high speed cargo transport. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
My launch point for my first time with this kayak was <span style="font-size: large;"><a href="https://www.southriveroutfitters.com/">South River Outfitters</a></span> in Stuart Fl. I have rented kayaks here in the past and I knew exactly what to expect for half the trip. This time I was going much farther than in past visits. </div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<iframe width="320" height="266" class="YOUTUBE-iframe-video" data-thumbnail-src="https://i.ytimg.com/vi/tTZG5rBg5M4/0.jpg" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/tTZG5rBg5M4?feature=player_embedded" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The trip starts off with houses on the left and nature on the right. About 20 minutes later it's all nature. Last time I did this trip I came across a few small alligators. This time, as you can see in the video above, I ran into a 4 footer right past the last house. There were several smaller ones close enough to the kayak that I got a tail splash by one as it dove for deeper water. When I got way out into the swampy area with the tighter waters, I ran into a huge gator who did not back down or submerge. I did not film it. I just back paddled away and decided to call it a day. As long as you stay alert and stay away so will the gators. I had one bump a canoe many years ago and there is no way I want that to happen again. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>

This was a great starter trip and one I've been looking forward to enjoying in my own water craft for quite a while. I will be back - With friends I hope next time. I miss kayaking in the Florida Keys so next time I will try a more open water adventure. </div>

I've always been a roller coaster fan since my first time on the big wooden roller coaster at <span style="font-size: large;"><a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hunt's_Pier">Hunt's Pier</a></span> in New Jersey. That would be in the early 1970's. My first looping roller coaster was the <span style="font-size: large;"><a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SooperDooperLooper">SooperDooperLooper</a></span> when it first opened at <span style="font-size: large;"><a href="http://www.hersheypark.com/">Hershey Park</a></span> in 1977. I've ridden some pretty large coasters all over the country but not for many years.<br />
<br />
Of course I have always ridden the Disney rides and even Universal's in Orlando but I had to put a pause on the really ferocious rides for a while. A high stress life and a high G-Force roller coaster leads to seeing black spots, chest pains, fainting, and balance problems.<br />
<br />
Now that I have gotten away from the high stress life, blood pressure under control, no more ice pick in the chest mid day job stress, I just wanted to give it a try again. It was always my dream for retirement to ride the biggest rides in the country. That ended 5 years ago on the Hulk in Orlando, A ride I've been on many times prior, made me get my blood pressure checked. 190/110 and an ER visit was the result. I was tipped off by the 3 day migraine and loss of balance. Sometimes you just need to know when to give it a rest. - Fast forward to last week.<br />

<span style="font-size: large;"><a href="https://seaworldparks.com/en/buschgardens-tampa/">Busch Gardens</a></span>, Tampa very early. Took a few shots with my cell phone to start off. There is plenty to see and do<br />
even if you don't ride the coasters. I arrived on Food and Wine Festival day but I had no plans to eat. I was on a mission. The first coaster I walked up to - <span style="font-size: large;"><a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SheiKra">Sheikra</a></span>. I watched a couple of test runs then started to regret the fact I drove to the park alone... This might have been a situation where a little prompting from a friend might have been needed. I wandered around a bit and made it to Kumba as they sent the last test car by and started loading passengers. Ummmm - Nope - Not ready - How about that train through the animal park. Sure - I'll start with that.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgv48lgLWO4qYIweYKkWIVV_mFMGn-8h4h3eHUYbHxl-O6Nbu0aNT4ez9-DoTtypqNdcUOyy_D0t5lbMeP1M60dw5gcwXuQwZdg5rC4FuX9hfW-oKWgYfmVNqerZvFGug1GNzTCztvfjec/s1600/IMG_1212.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgv48lgLWO4qYIweYKkWIVV_mFMGn-8h4h3eHUYbHxl-O6Nbu0aNT4ez9-DoTtypqNdcUOyy_D0t5lbMeP1M60dw5gcwXuQwZdg5rC4FuX9hfW-oKWgYfmVNqerZvFGug1GNzTCztvfjec/s320/IMG_1212.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The nice thing about the train, you get to see all the coasters in the park. Some pretty close up. Helps with the courage thing as you watch hundreds of happy people fly by. I could have stopped at several stations but I was making my plan. That was to ride every one before days end.... starting the moment I got off the train.</div>
<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
First up - <span style="font-size: large;"><a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kumba_(roller_coaster)">Kumba</a></span>. I first rode this when it was new. <span style="font-size: large;"><a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Montu_(roller_coaster)">Montu </a></span>when that opened as well in 1996. That was the last new coaster I rode in Tampa so I had quite a few to catch up on. Well - it had an issue while I waited so I got out of line. By the end of the day, it was the only one I didn't ride. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEil4j6kX2WAJyDV9SGEcJVf06dQCKaR2zZGJQfxWrJeroADn8yW4l1R0pVBLDzJoOKQ_hCZ3cH7baykh8ehpRxzpXD7za3Jn0XY0U5bAm65GPWqXT6RKFO-mRNq7yOlGYaGvSD0AHEQOeg/s1600/IMG_1221.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="282" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEil4j6kX2WAJyDV9SGEcJVf06dQCKaR2zZGJQfxWrJeroADn8yW4l1R0pVBLDzJoOKQ_hCZ3cH7baykh8ehpRxzpXD7za3Jn0XY0U5bAm65GPWqXT6RKFO-mRNq7yOlGYaGvSD0AHEQOeg/s320/IMG_1221.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="text-align: left;">About this time, the park was starting to get crowded - Hey look! Sheikra only a 10 minute wait - I wonder why? Oh cool! Front row!! So at nearly noon, after stalling all morning..... this is how I started my day. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="text-align: left;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="text-align: left;">Now I've been told in the past, riding with me is like riding with Glenn Close in the rollercoaster scene from </span><span style="font-size: large; text-align: left;"><a href="https://youtu.be/lVHKGlDvP7M">Fatal Attraction</a></span><span style="text-align: left;">. It takes a lot for me to do much more than smile a little. This one had me screaming and laughing at the top of my emotional register. Just the first drop alone had me shaking like a quadruple espresso. </span></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiNf2bM9IZuDsxYIO9dOMPkiceWeSzmtf6-g3JCrlt14WW7lFIp0k-aq4TCOaAJQnYaPVQ8v2Uns_mluxrp-jHwQkBSmK8nz1WI8cS10MH-UFte95Tz5EDHfeOGZx5VEd3zYwA4ZnLkjYo/s1600/IMG_1229.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="306" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiNf2bM9IZuDsxYIO9dOMPkiceWeSzmtf6-g3JCrlt14WW7lFIp0k-aq4TCOaAJQnYaPVQ8v2Uns_mluxrp-jHwQkBSmK8nz1WI8cS10MH-UFte95Tz5EDHfeOGZx5VEd3zYwA4ZnLkjYo/s320/IMG_1229.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
After that it was ON! I rode one right after another. Just a tip - Montu, then <span style="font-size: large;"><a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cobra%27s_Curse">Cobra's Curse</a>. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Those spinning rides still get to me. All in all, best day ever. No serious medical situation, not even the slightest headache. I have several Florida coasters to check out then I'm hoping to start my quest to ride the biggest and baddest. I threw together some cell phone clips to enjoy. But better yet - go ride. Nothing gets the stress out like a scream. </div>

Two reasons - It runs the same time as my home town fair and it's 300 miles from my home. My goal this year was to catch them all. Mission accomplished.<br />

<script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<a data-flickr-embed="false" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/wolfbyte999/33554490435/in/album-72157679936238380/" title="DSC_8154"><img alt="DSC_8154" height="427" src="https://c1.staticflickr.com/4/3755/33554490435_c1d3b79798_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<br />
<br />
<div>
I have heard wildly mixed reviews on this show from it's a must see to not worth the drive. I can say with certainty my review will not be mixed. I LOVED IT!!!! Easily takes the top spot of my favorite Florida Festival.<br />
<br /></div>
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="false" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/wolfbyte999/33173869940/in/album-72157679936238380/" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;" title="DSC_7660"><img alt="DSC_7660" height="266" src="https://c1.staticflickr.com/4/3937/33173869940_ecbe7de19a_z.jpg" width="400" /></a>The first thing I noticed were the trees. As the sun got higher in the sky, I appreciated them more and more. The next thing I noticed was this fair is huge. I managed to walk through much of it before the crowds but it took a while. Later in the day the crowds made walking quickly impossible.<br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="false" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/wolfbyte999/33520622876/in/album-72157679936238380/" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="DSC_9229"><img alt="DSC_9229" height="291" src="https://c1.staticflickr.com/3/2929/33520622876_6dcf0fc8bf_z.jpg" width="400" /></a><br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
Unlike every other fair I have been to, including <span style="font-size: large;"><a href="http://www.srfestival.com/">Scarborough Renaissance Festival</a></span> in Texas, and The <span style="font-size: large;"><a href="http://www.garenfest.com/">Georgia Renaissance Festival</a></span>, I knew virtually no one at this festival. Pretty much 3 acts, 2 vendors, and 1 Human Chess Match fighter. Meeting new people has never been my strong suit and it was pretty obvious as the day wore on that there are not a lot of photographers at this show. None I recognized at least.<br />
<br />
Since I did my typical thing of showing up before the pre-show at the gates and being escorted out a half hour after closing, that situation changed dramatically. Considering the 20,000 views on my photos already, I think it's safe to say I made a few new friends.<br />
<br />
So what can you expect on your visit? A very colorful royal court. I strongly suggest getting to the fair before opening to watch their show at the gate. You will also thank me for this tip when it's time for your journey home. Being closer to the street will greatly cut down your time exiting the parking lot at the end of the day.<br />

They show up in the most unexpected places. It's hard to tell from my photos but there is a larger percentage of children attending this fair then most I visit. That was keeping the faires and children's stage acts very busy. Long before I brought my cameras to these fairs I brought my daughter. The best way to unplug your children is to take them to a full day of live interaction. And if you accidently get called up on stage and have to run around shouting about wearing your man pants.... yep, that's a memory you will share with your child and cherish forever.... apparently. <br />

One of the the big deciding factors in attending this show was to see the Human Chess Match. I caught their show recently at a different fair and yes - it was worth the drive to see them again. Could I have photographed it better? Ummm Yes. I missed the real action shots. My camera is fast - the action on this stage is faster. At least you will know these are the slowest moments in the whole show. </div>

<br />
Then there is <span style="font-size: large;"><a href="http://acrobellum.com/">Acrobellum</a></span>. This is my third time seeing this troupe and I'm not sure how to describe them. They put on an amazing stage show but they are also everywhere during the day. Collectively they are like a toddler, high on sugar and maybe a spoonful of adult cold medicine. They are non stop everywhere from the opening gate, to the parade, to cheering at the chess match, wandering the lanes, to the last ones I saw as one of them escorted me to the exit after closing. They raise the energy level of any fair but here they were on fire.<br />

<br />
This is barely a fraction of what I saw in two full days and really I would need two more to even begin to say I saw it all. I am seriously considering going back the last weekend. If not - Next year for sure.<br />

This was a difficult one as it was way out of budget. I purchased this house four years ago by emptying my savings and slowly fixing as I went. To take a quick look at the before pictures <span style="font-size: large;">[<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/wolfbyte999/albums/72157631797327957">click here]</a></span>.<br />
<br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="false" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/wolfbyte999/32344386894/in/album-72157680916317685/" title="DSC_6133"><img alt="DSC_6133" height="427" src="https://c1.staticflickr.com/3/2855/32344386894_6402128546_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<br />
<br />
I could not afford Impact Glass on the patio doors so I went with accordions. I was completely opposed to individual panels as is typical in Florida. A bit inconvenient and far cheaper but my father can no longer put his own up. I plan to be here a while so best to plan for the future. <br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="false" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/wolfbyte999/33189927985/in/album-72157680916317685/" title="DSC_7210"><img alt="DSC_7210" height="417" src="https://c1.staticflickr.com/3/2815/33189927985_65dd4ef9ed_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="false" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/wolfbyte999/33189713345/in/album-72157680916317685/" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="IMG_1124"><img alt="IMG_1124" height="320" src="https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/675/33189713345_412c7de5b5_z.jpg" width="240" /></a>So the big questions - Why Impact Windows, and what was the cost.<br />
<br />
The first consideration was none of the windows in this house functioned. Cracked glass, leaks sealed with duct tape, some did not open, of those that did, none would stay open without a prop, and out of 12 windows only two had screens. The cost of accordions for the whole house would have been less even if I replaced the windows with regular glass. I would still need to put panels on two as they were too small.<br />
<br />
The windows I chose are double glass, with an inert gas between the panes. They reduce the light, and greatly reduce the heat. Also they cut the noise down considerably. For all the logical reasons - Impact Glass was the way to go. Will I save enough in energy costs to pay for them? Not a chance but every little bit helps.<br />
<br />
<br />
<script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<br />
<script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<a data-flickr-embed="false" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/wolfbyte999/33033011392/in/album-72157680916317685/" title="IMG_1106"><img alt="IMG_1106" height="640" src="https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/593/33033011392_bfbb0ed64b_z.jpg" width="626" /></a><br />
<br />
So now about those cost considerations. This whole job was just under $20,000. I retired a year and a half ago and my payout went into two bathrooms. I had a few dollars left in savings but not even half. I priced out accordion shutters well over a year ago and was saving for that but it would have been a bad choice if I ever decided to change out the windows. I got a quick price on windows over a year ago and had sticker shock. Several months ago I had a company quote and because of the "This price is only good for tonight" hard ball sales tactic - I threw them out of my house. I looked into some local companies but I was finding mixed reviews.<br />
<br />
Well two things happened. A near miss by hurricane Mathew prompting me to make a decision and a slight uptick in my stock investments for some strange reason helping me with the rest of the cost.<br />
<br />
<script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<a data-flickr-embed="false" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/wolfbyte999/32807043970/in/album-72157680916317685/" title="IMG_1118"><img alt="IMG_1118" height="480" src="https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/598/32807043970_b6fe09a1e1_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
That's when I called Home Depot. John the sales person could not have been nicer or more laid back. He did the measure, showed me the specs, presented to me the windows I had already researched, set the price. I signed the deal. That started a flurry of contacts with Home Depot. An entire team of people doing scheduling, installing, and satisfaction surveys. Probably the most pleasant team of people I've worked with on a project this large.<br />
<br />
<script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<a data-flickr-embed="false" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/wolfbyte999/33189737155/in/album-72157680916317685/" title="IMG_1121"><img alt="IMG_1121" height="480" src="https://c1.staticflickr.com/4/3827/33189737155_2ff2c33828_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
Let's talk about the mess. It's loud, dirty, hot, but as far as a mess, my floor might have been a bit cleaner when they left. I had to do a little dusting but nothing more than a normal week. they covered everything in the house. The whole job took two days but had a missing piece not been delayed in arriving, it could well have taken just one. The missing piece actually showed up by the end of the day but the guys had knocked off at 3:00.<br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="false" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/wolfbyte999/33061844431/in/album-72157680916317685/" title="IMG_1110"><img alt="IMG_1110" height="480" src="https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/669/33061844431_c409d6d85b_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
The accordian shutters had actually been done a few weeks prior, in about two hours. Those guys also swept up leaving my patio in perfect condition. Home Depot handled all the permitting. The inspector was out the very next day to pass my installation. My schedule is pretty open right now but a three day start to inspection project is far quicker than I was expecting.<br />
<br />
<script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<a data-flickr-embed="false" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/wolfbyte999/33032835882/in/album-72157680916317685/" title="IMG_1131"><img alt="IMG_1131" height="480" src="https://c1.staticflickr.com/3/2825/33032835882_a2fa34d96f_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<br />
<br />
I don't mean to be making an advertisement for a particular company but I have used Home Depot for a kitchen install years ago and I knew what to expect. They were actually a few hundred bucks more than Mr Hard Sell after the 5 "discounts" he was offering but since his "deal" was only good for one night only, I felt like maybe his warranty would be the same. I'll take my chances that Home Depot will still be around in the future. If you have any questions, shoot me a comment.<br />
<br />

<a href="http://www.ren-fest.com/"><span style="font-size: large;">The Florida Renaissance Festival</span></a>. Since I was here last year I've been to Scarborough Texas, The Fairs in Lady of the Lake, Sarasota, Orlando, and Brevard, in Florida. In past years I've done the Fort Myers, and Gainesville faires, and even a trip to Georgia. This will always be my first though and the one I have the most friends. I arrived on my favorite themed weekend - Time Travelers.<br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="False" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/wolfbyte999/32839478072/in/album-72157678313798922/" title="DSC_6303"><img alt="DSC_6303" height="488" src="https://c1.staticflickr.com/3/2640/32839478072_302ecbd9f3_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
I was not sure I was going to make much of an appearance this year but as always - Magic happens. I spent a lot more time talking to some really great people than taking photos. When I got home I realized I mostly took photos of people I knew. There were a few I just met but this is the kind of place were friendships can be made quickly and last a lifetime.<br />
<br />
<script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<a data-flickr-embed="False" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/wolfbyte999/32180026543/in/album-72157678313798922/" title="DSC_6241"><img alt="DSC_6241" height="394" src="https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/329/32180026543_8ea28f8a6d_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
Since this is the 25 anniversary of the festival, there was plenty of new shows to see. I tried to capture them but I will have to go back again next weekend and try a little harder.<br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="False" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/wolfbyte999/32995397135/in/album-72157678313798922/" title="DSC_6231"><img alt="DSC_6231" height="427" src="https://c1.staticflickr.com/3/2286/32995397135_eb2d5a8b73_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
It was also great visiting with old and new friends I met in other shows. Makes it not seem so long when you get to visit with folks you just saw up the road a few weeks ago rather than letting a full year pass by.<br />
<br />

<br />
I have 300 more photos for those interested - Just [<span style="font-size: large;"><a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/wolfbyte999/albums/72157678313798922">click here</a></span>] I'm planning at least one more visit. Hope to get to the rest of the people I know. Maybe meet a few more for good measure.<br />

I had big plans to attend a different show but life intervened. I thought I knew all the shows in Florida and if you are following my blog you know I've recently been on a quest to visit them all. This is one I never heard of and it's only an hour and a half away from home.<br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="False" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/wolfbyte999/32428000756/in/album-72157677730830551/" title="Brevard's Renaissance Fair - 2017"><img alt="Brevard's Renaissance Fair - 2017" height="522" src="https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/714/32428000756_1d068472db_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
There is a good reason I've never heard of it. It's only their second year. There is plenty of things I don't post in my blog. The thought of getting away for a few hours and maybe seeing a friend or two was very appealing. I missed the opening by only about 5 minutes but there was no one at the gate so I was not expecting a large show.<br />
<br />
<script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<a data-flickr-embed="false" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/wolfbyte999/32427910696/in/album-72157677730830551/" title="Brevard's Renaissance Fair - 2017"><img alt="Brevard's Renaissance Fair - 2017" height="427" src="https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/400/32427910696_32d593f1ac_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
Well I significantly underestimated with my first impressions. It's huge in relation to the three fairs I recently attended. Just when I thought I was to the outskirts, cross a bridge and there is more. So much more in fact that I missed a considerable amount of the acts. A second visit is in order.<br />
<br />
<script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<a data-flickr-embed="False" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/wolfbyte999/32427352826/in/album-72157677730830551/" title="Brevard's Renaissance Fair - 2017"><img alt="Brevard's Renaissance Fair - 2017" height="443" src="https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/553/32427352826_0f7bd21c6c_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
Of course part of my delay in doing my usual show to show to show thing was the fact there were so many people there I knew. It would appear that I was way late in finding out about this fair. So many of my friends back for a second year I don't know how I missed the memo.<br />
<br />
<script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<a data-flickr-embed="False" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/wolfbyte999/32316239442/in/album-72157677730830551/" title="Brevard's Renaissance Fair - 2017"><img alt="Brevard's Renaissance Fair - 2017" height="427" src="https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/533/32316239442_7e7de3fa89_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
I took a good amount of photos between hugs and conversations. For the rest of them <span style="font-size: large;"><a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/wolfbyte999/albums/72157677730830551">[click here]</a>. </span>I did not necessarily post the best ones in this blog. I posted the ones I found in social media as profile pictures, show promotions, commented on, or shared multiple times. All in just 3 days.<br />
<br />
<script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<a data-flickr-embed="False" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/wolfbyte999/32090902670/in/album-72157677730830551/" title="Brevard's Renaissance Fair - 2017"><img alt="Brevard's Renaissance Fair - 2017" height="408" src="https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/647/32090902670_7f2fc4b8f9_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
It's not as important to me to take the perfect photo as it is to capture the perfect moment that means something to someone else. I notice in every photo the smiles. Well that's exactly how it felt on this side of the camera too.<br />
<br />
<script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<a data-flickr-embed="False" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/wolfbyte999/31658166643/in/album-72157677730830551/" title="Brevard's Renaissance Fair - 2017"><img alt="Brevard's Renaissance Fair - 2017" height="511" src="https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/376/31658166643_6d48edaf08_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
Sometimes life goes a little sideways. The details don't matter. Happens to everyone. I suggest spending a full day with the most pleasant, uplifting, entertaining, and happy people you can find. Just eight hours with my friends at Brevard's Renaissance Fair and I have been smiling non stop for days.<br />

If you are reading this today, you have two more weekends for some fair therapy. So quit posting your political memes and get some fresh air. Maybe make a few new friends. Make a difference and support your local artists and entertainers. I've been doing it over 20 years now and I'm the happiest person I know even on my worst days.Bob Carlsonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00558512211379314724noreply@blogger.com0Wickham Park, 2500 Parkway Dr, Melbourne, FL 32935, USA28.1640516 -80.6623935000000070.12851960000000062 -121.9709875 56.1995836 -39.353799500000008tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6725175289178693214.post-4517156999475622792016-12-14T23:35:00.000-05:002016-12-14T23:35:46.506-05:00The Bridges of Palm CityToday was one of those rare days that I could have easily gotten lost in worries. Not really my style. To fight off the blues in my head I decided to enjoy the blues of the sky and water.<br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="false" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/wolfbyte999/31503816452/in/album-72157677754522656/" title="DSC_5463"><img alt="DSC_5463" height="388" src="https://c5.staticflickr.com/6/5559/31503816452_2a84ff7800_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
I gathered my old camera, oldest lens, 36 year old beach cruiser bike, 56 year old body, and exercised the whole group. Keep things in good shape, they last a long time.<br />
<br />
I had a vague idea it was a good day to shoot bridges and anything else of interest. The ride was more important than setting goals.<br />
<br />
<script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<a data-flickr-embed="false" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/wolfbyte999/31277710670/in/album-72157677754522656/" title="DSC_5506"><img alt="DSC_5506" height="409" src="https://c7.staticflickr.com/1/512/31277710670_8ce9782c5e_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
After a year and a half of living in my new home town, I will be the first to admit I have done a miserable job of making friends. Maybe because I do things on the weekdays like get on my bike and ride at 7:30 in the morning. Maybe because even on a good day the people I know are spread all over the country. Many weekends I'm out of town so that does not help. On those rare days I want to sit and have a conversation over a cup of coffee, I have a bit of a vacuum at the moment.<br />
<br />
<script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<a data-flickr-embed="false" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/wolfbyte999/31504033822/in/album-72157677754522656/" title="DSC_5442"><img alt="DSC_5442" height="414" src="https://c7.staticflickr.com/6/5553/31504033822_f7c4c06e0d_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
Hours into my ride I found a tiny church in the most perfect location you could imagine a church to be in. I am hardly the most friendly person but as I was shooting the church I met the youth pastor Crisman Koechig. I am not what you might call religious but it did seem rather convenient to have someone to speak to on the only day I really needed it. In fact he was the only person I spoke face to face to all day.<br />
<br />
<script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<a data-flickr-embed="false" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/wolfbyte999/31534058401/in/album-72157677754522656/" title="DSC_5483"><img alt="DSC_5483" height="409" src="https://c2.staticflickr.com/1/705/31534058401_4394fa8a6c_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script><br />
<br />
Probably not the most world changing conversation for him. For me it was significant. I explained why I was on this particular ride and he was nice enough to listen. He even offered to say a few prayers. No for me. I'm doing pretty well. But for someone currently in a pretty big need.<br />
<br />
It never hurts to have someone build a little bridge for you, even if just to carry a message. Not all bridges are concrete and steel. If I was in the market to reacquaint myself with a church, I would certainly choose one where the pastor walks out in the street and talks to a stranger for a half hour. If he wonders if he makes a difference - today he did.<br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="false" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/wolfbyte999/31503667372/in/album-72157677754522656/" title="DSC_5492"><img alt="DSC_5492" height="553" src="https://c5.staticflickr.com/1/722/31503667372_b651a0128c_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<br />
<br />
It will be a few days, maybe a couple of weeks before I know how this will all turn out but today was a good day. That's all that matters right now.<br />

This is the third new (to me) renaissance faire I've been to in about three weekends and the 10th venue overall in the last 20+ years. I arrived just before opening and left after close so I got to see it all. If you want to skip the reading and go right to the photos<br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/wolfbyte999/albums/72157673504716233"> [click here]</a></span><br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="false" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/wolfbyte999/30605310584/in/album-72157673504716233/" title="DSC_6569"><img alt="DSC_6569" height="448" src="https://c1.staticflickr.com/6/5547/30605310584_8e9966592c_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<br />
<br />
I'll start right off with the three major complaints I heard during the day. The ticket price of $20 was too much for the size of the show, the stages needed to be raised, and no pub. Good points, all of which will be addressed next year I'm told. In my opinion, if you can do better for cheaper in the first year of a brand new faire, invite me. I would like to see it. Comparing this show to a 20 and 30 year old show is like comparing a new born to a college student. Unlike some - I will speak only to this show and not compare it to others.<br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="false" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/wolfbyte999/31282503552/in/album-72157673504716233/" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="DSC_5304"><img alt="DSC_5304" height="427" src="https://c1.staticflickr.com/6/5775/31282503552_40a6277a97_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<a data-flickr-embed="false" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/wolfbyte999/31311105351/in/album-72157673504716233/" title="DSC_6702"><img alt="DSC_6702" height="427" src="https://c8.staticflickr.com/6/5753/31311105351_f5ba1ab8b6_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<br />
<br />
I knew most of the acts from my many travels and I always enjoy watching my friends perform. The point of my recent journeys to new lands and new faires is to see new acts. The Living Chess Board performed by <span style="font-size: large;"><a href="http://www.lanceorlando.com/">Lance Orlando</a> </span>was by far the standout show of the day. I have seen many a living chess board but none with as much spark flying fury, high energy battles, nor earth shaking falls. When not performing, the cast of this show spent the day interacting with the visitors. So much more thrilling to cheer for a combatant you just made friends with a few hours before. They certainly held the attention of the crowd. They were also a big part of why I felt so welcomed at this show.<br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="false" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/wolfbyte999/31057774140/in/album-72157673504716233/" title="DSC_5313"><img alt="DSC_5313" height="427" src="https://c5.staticflickr.com/6/5836/31057774140_270024682c_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<br />
<br />
So what did this festival get right? The location number one. This faire could grow 2-3 times its size in the given space easily. It will not take long to do so. Those attending this inaugural show were Pirates from St Augustine and Daytona, Cosplayers from Tampa and Fort Lauderdale, and Renaissance patrons from all over the state. There were even some folks from Orlando. That's just the ones I know. In most towns, the faire comes to you. In this place the world comes to Orlando. There are also a few thousand people living just outside the park and millions just a few minutes drive. This faire was primarily advertised on social media and in my humble opinion exceeded attendance expectations. It takes time to build a community like at other faires but to see so many friends travel from so far away was amazing to me.<br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="false" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/wolfbyte999/30620366993/in/album-72157673504716233/" title="DSC_5194"><img alt="DSC_5194" height="449" src="https://c2.staticflickr.com/6/5562/30620366993_773ee72a40_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
What was the biggest buzz I caught during the day? Next Year! Next year I'm bringing the cannon's, Next year I'm setting up a booth. I'm telling this person and that person they need to be here next year. There was a huge amount of ground by the lake unused and plenty of room for a joust on the other side. Some of my friends were ready to start staking claims on the unused space.<br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="false" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/wolfbyte999/30606492184/in/album-72157673504716233/" style="clear: left; display: inline !important; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;" title="DSC_5203"><img alt="DSC_5203" height="427" src="https://c1.staticflickr.com/6/5790/30606492184_b9b50cb431_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
This faire is the perfect alternative to a day at the theme parks or in my case - the perfect addition to. It is rare you can attend the first year of anything these days so it was quite a thrill to document the first year with my camera. I consider it the perfect soft opening for those of us who truly love outdoor live entertainment. I can guarantee I will be back over the next few years just to watch it grow.<br />
<br />
<script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<a data-flickr-embed="false" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/wolfbyte999/31391701936/in/album-72157673504716233/" title="DSC_5188"><img alt="DSC_5188" height="637" src="https://c1.staticflickr.com/6/5697/31391701936_9dc65702b4_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<br />
<br />
The best part of this year was the time spent with far flung friends I seldom see. It's the people that make these festivals a success, not the corporations. The more you go - the more people you know. That is part of the fun of attending .<br />
<br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="false" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/wolfbyte999/30618255913/in/album-72157673504716233/" title="DSC_6794"><img alt="DSC_6794" height="427" src="https://c2.staticflickr.com/6/5790/30618255913_85642ec79e_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<br />
<br />
Beside - where else will a fairy make you a fish out of a soap bubble. I'll leave you with that thought. Till next year my friends. <br />

I would prefer to get my information first hand - like actually going myself. I always try and get as much information as I can before I travel to new places. The Sarasota Medieval Fair web page was the perfect place to start.<br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="false" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/wolfbyte999/31187368045/in/album-72157675402886711/" title="DSC_4760"><img alt="DSC_4760" height="438" src="https://c6.staticflickr.com/6/5589/31187368045_94d888b45a_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<br />
<br />
They have one of the most informative websites I've seen so far. Good sign. I discovered I knew a few acts and vendors already but there was going to be over half the acts I've never seen before. That is really the point of making these journeys.<br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="false" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/wolfbyte999/31151493076/in/album-72157675402886711/" title="DSC_4806"><img alt="DSC_4806" height="472" src="https://c5.staticflickr.com/6/5657/31151493076_c6beb2dfac_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
One of the common comments I've heard about this show is it's small. It may have been at one time but it was pretty extensive on my visit. From the map it did not seem like it was going to be an all day event but they managed to squeeze a tremendous amount of fun in a small space. <br />
<br />
<script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<a data-flickr-embed="false" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/wolfbyte999/30366314394/in/album-72157675402886711/" title="DSC_4785"><img alt="DSC_4785" height="427" src="https://c3.staticflickr.com/6/5495/30366314394_a7c88c58c7_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
I was there from before opening gun till closing and try as I might, I did not see all the shows. If time was available I could have easily spent a second day and filled it with the things I didn't get a chance to enjoy.<br />
<br />
<script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<a data-flickr-embed="false" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/wolfbyte999/31186750055/in/album-72157675402886711/" title="DSC_4840"><img alt="DSC_4840" height="427" src="https://c8.staticflickr.com/6/5709/31186750055_45b683f0c0_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
As a 20+ year veteran of fair going, there have been a few acts I have seen dozens and dozens of times over the years. The Washing Well Wenches in particular. I have enjoyed them in now four different cities and know several cast members. This show was in fact the only show I ever participated in - and that was on my first ever visit to a fair. One heck of an introduction to live theater.<br />
<br />
<script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<a data-flickr-embed="false" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/wolfbyte999/31150065886/in/album-72157675402886711/" title="DSC_6230"><img alt="DSC_6230" height="427" src="https://c7.staticflickr.com/6/5815/31150065886_bdb33baf2e_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
In 20+ years I have never laughed as hard as I did at this particular show. I have never seen an audience member so stubborn as to receive a whole bucket of water to the head. This is live performance at its unpredictable and hilarious best and why I personally travel hundreds of miles to experience it.<br />
<br />
<script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<a data-flickr-embed="false" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/wolfbyte999/31149627276/in/album-72157675402886711/" title="DSC_5891"><img alt="DSC_5891" height="427" src="https://c5.staticflickr.com/6/5515/31149627276_f2f3479945_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
The one thing that stood out was the number of friends I ran into. Both costumed or working but more importantly performers who were just in street clothes there to see the shows. I can't think of another venue I've been to that performers I know well just come to have some fun. <br />
<br />
<script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<a data-flickr-embed="false" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/wolfbyte999/30817405740/in/album-72157675402886711/" title="DSC_6069"><img alt="DSC_6069" height="427" src="https://c5.staticflickr.com/6/5671/30817405740_d01492ab98_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<br />
<br />
Oh - and I got a shattered lance shot. Only my second ever and it's a good one. For the rest of my photos from this event<span style="font-size: large;"><a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/wolfbyte999/albums/72157675402886711"> [click here] </a></span><br />
<br />
They are not all as good as this one but they certainly will give you a birdseye view of the this fair. Even though this one is the farthest from my house, I can see myself coming back next year.<br />

I have other photos from our "Tour of Old Florida" trip way back 10 years ago on her high school break. I have actually been revisiting many places in recent years from that trip.<br />

I'm not sure if it was the beautiful house and furnishings, the outdoor sculpture garden, or the gigantic ancient paintings in the galleries I was not allowed to photograph. This was actually a last minute choice as I discovered pre-internet our original stop was closed mondays. All I remember was my daughter and I spending way more time than originally allotted.<br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="false" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/wolfbyte999/31012278652/in/album-72157675339239201/" title="P1050693"><img alt="P1050693" height="360" src="https://c5.staticflickr.com/6/5505/31012278652_90f2a8c49a_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<br />
<br />
It was the same on my latest trip. What was supposed to be a quick visit and on to other things turned instead to an all day event and barely catching the sunset at our final destination.<br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="false" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/wolfbyte999/30349690633/in/album-72157675339239201/" title="P1050751"><img alt="P1050751" height="360" src="https://c2.staticflickr.com/6/5492/30349690633_d0db84ce93_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<br />
<br />
There was a new tour added since my visit many years ago. The Private Places Tour. I did not take that tour but I should have. It was only $10.00 more than the guided tour and I am seriously thinking of driving back to do it. But on a Monday as normal admission is free for Florida residents.<br />
<br />

<br />
<br />
I am actually old enough to remember a Big Top circus show. Seeing the entire circus life laid out in this model really made me think how lucky I was to have caught the very last performances of this kind. Of course the circus still lives in smaller venues but it's the Big Top that has passed on to history.<br />

Well.... life. Not always the best facilitator of a well conceived plan. So I have regrouped and changed my focus to Florida Faires I have never yet attended. First stop on this re-imagined adventure - <span style="font-size: large;"><a href="http://www.medievalfest.com/">The Lady of the Lakes Renaissance Faire</a></span>.<br />
<br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="false" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/wolfbyte999/30898366501/in/album-72157676482447276/" title="DSC_4496"><img alt="DSC_4496" height="368" src="https://c6.staticflickr.com/6/5739/30898366501_58e9cf8607_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<br />
<br />
The last two faires I attended and the one I missed are huge. That has a certain appeal and plenty of variety. It also comes with crowds and a lack of interaction. I have other places I go for that type of activity.<br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="false" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/wolfbyte999/22809334378/in/album-72157676482447276/" title="DSC_5618"><img alt="DSC_5618" height="427" src="https://c3.staticflickr.com/6/5764/22809334378_eb3d733003_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<br />
<br />
I have over the last 20+ years made quite a few friends but friends that travel. There are shows I can no longer get a front row seat or spend time in conversation with the people I know and the people I will soon know.<br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="false" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/wolfbyte999/30987564925/in/album-72157676482447276/" title="DSC_5627"><img alt="DSC_5627" height="427" src="https://c6.staticflickr.com/6/5828/30987564925_9599f37119_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<br />
<br />
Case in point is the <span style="font-size: large;"><a href="http://www.flightoftheraptor.com/">Flight of the Raptor</a></span> show. It has been many years since I have been in the front row with camera ready and right after been able to chat with the performers.<br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="false" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/wolfbyte999/30899000251/in/album-72157676482447276/" title="DSC_5669"><img alt="DSC_5669" height="447" src="https://c4.staticflickr.com/6/5523/30899000251_79b6efc0d2_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<br />
<br />
It has always been my goal to feel like part of the show rather than a far off spectator. At one point the falcon returned to center stage passing inches over my head. They do not make a sound by the way, just a puff of air as the pass by.<br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="false" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/wolfbyte999/22807044728/in/album-72157676482447276/" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="DSC_4692"><img alt="DSC_4692" height="427" src="https://c1.staticflickr.com/6/5588/22807044728_8bbb02c8f2_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This is the reason I am choosing to pursue the smaller venues this season. It's great to see old friends, recent friends, and make new friends. It is especially gratifying seeing old friends in new roles and marveling at the depth of their talents. </div>

<br />
I have several more Florida festivals planned so stay tuned. Or better yet join me.<br />

We arrived in <span style="font-size: large;"><a href="http://www.tavares.org/">Tavares</a></span> on the <span style="font-size: large;"><a href="http://www.orangeblossomcannonball.com/">Orange Blossom Cannonball</a>, </span>the vintage train that runs along Lake Dora. There was an event at the time but as we were enjoying that, I watched a seaplane launch down a boat ramp and take off.<br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="false" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/wolfbyte999/30928739916/in/album-72157675029275511/" style="clear: left; display: inline !important; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="IMG_0873"><img alt="IMG_0873" height="480" src="https://c5.staticflickr.com/6/5583/30928739916_268389e50c_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/wolfbyte999/30928739916/in/album-72157675029275511/" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="IMG_0873"><br /></a><a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/wolfbyte999/30928739916/in/album-72157675029275511/" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="IMG_0873"><br /></a><a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/wolfbyte999/30928739916/in/album-72157675029275511/" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="IMG_0873"><br /></a><br />
<br />
There was not enough time on that trip to do it so I made a special trip just to fly. I have to say, there is a huge difference in this town between a festival day and a national holiday. I did not book ahead so I was taking a chance but I also only live 3 hours away and weather is a factor.<br />
<br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="false" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/wolfbyte999/30928771586/in/album-72157675029275511/" title="IMG_0871"><img alt="IMG_0871" height="480" src="https://c3.staticflickr.com/6/5593/30928771586_8bcbfae160_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
We had an event scheduled for the weekend so we took our chances and booked a room at the <span style="font-size: large;"><a href="http://www.keywestlakedora.com/">Key West Resort </a></span>on Lake Dora. Perfect choice. The hotel is so new it's not quite completed. Actually a lot of the downtown was newly renovated or receiving those last minute final touches. When we arrived - it was a ghost town. We managed to walk right up and book one of the two planes. Total wait time - nothing.<br />
<br />
<script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<a data-flickr-embed="false" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/wolfbyte999/30964263275/in/album-72157675029275511/" title="IMG_0884"><img alt="IMG_0884" height="419" src="https://c4.staticflickr.com/6/5340/30964263275_8a8fbef559_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
There are several flights available from <span style="font-size: large;"><a href="https://www.jonesairandsea.com/">Jones Brothers</a></span> at various prices so check ahead to decide what fits for you. We picked the middle of the road flight of $99.00 for a 30 minute tour of the lakes. Any longer would have exceeded my budget, but any shorter and I would have been right back in the office to fly again. <br />
<br />
<script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<a data-flickr-embed="false" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/wolfbyte999/30875928071/in/album-72157675029275511/" title="IMG_0866"><img alt="IMG_0866" height="480" src="https://c8.staticflickr.com/6/5559/30875928071_965882438e_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
The plane flies low enough you can see every detail on the ground. We even skipped off a lake for that added thrill. You just have to say "This is better than an airboat ride" apparently. Our pilot was very accommodating. He even swung past the event were were going to the next day. I can not tell you how much I want to take flying lessons right now.<br />
<br />
<script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<a data-flickr-embed="false" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/wolfbyte999/30928711486/in/album-72157675029275511/" title="IMG_0880"><img alt="IMG_0880" height="480" src="https://c7.staticflickr.com/6/5494/30928711486_ffe9983cac_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
Sunset on Lake Dora is a magnificent site. This is now my third for the year. The locals tell me it never gets old. Speaking of which, this little daytime ghost town became a happening place right after the sun went down. There is plenty of parking which filled to the brim around 8:00 PM.<br />
<br />
<script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<a data-flickr-embed="false" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/wolfbyte999/30662639300/in/album-72157675029275511/" title="IMG_0886"><img alt="IMG_0886" height="451" src="https://c5.staticflickr.com/6/5323/30662639300_473c88cde7_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script><br />
<br />
Sunrise from our hotel was far more spectacular than my cell phone could capture. <span style="font-size: large;"><a href="http://puddlejumperslakeside.com/">Puddle Jumpers </a></span>is right there in the photo. They made our lunch, dinner, and evening entertainment a truly special event. The manager took a special interest in us..... we seemed a bit lost when we were wandering around looking for a lunch place. It's not so much the place that's special in these tiny towns, it's the people.<br />
<br />
The seaplane base is just a half block away. The train station just a bit farther. Everything we found of interest was a short walk. This was the perfect escape from our big town lives. Huge thanks to everyone who made us feel welcome.<br />

I have had quite a few and many more planned in the upcoming months. Not all are worth writing home about. Especially the ones I've already done multiple times.<br />
<br />
Now that my Disney Annual Pass has run out, I really wanted a total relax-ication. Away from the crowds, theme parks, roller coasters. Something peaceful and laid back. But with great food and something to occupy my time. I found that in <span style="font-size: large;"><a href="http://ci.mount-dora.fl.us/">Mount Dora.</a></span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjrf0uXFVthJmi_AK2bOkehmMxUClDeb1Fttk0eILv1HY-bo3AgpcUcAfRKhu632Bdjeo_qVs4z1ZDWwXWaJt4CNbGgTS2jWd_aPXd4KIq64LvMG9AzPhJ3CoKT0FIpcExT5a_dSQZONGc/s1600/DSC_3946.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="263" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjrf0uXFVthJmi_AK2bOkehmMxUClDeb1Fttk0eILv1HY-bo3AgpcUcAfRKhu632Bdjeo_qVs4z1ZDWwXWaJt4CNbGgTS2jWd_aPXd4KIq64LvMG9AzPhJ3CoKT0FIpcExT5a_dSQZONGc/s400/DSC_3946.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
I have been here before but with my daughter on one of those trips we took when she was in highschool. Not much more than a dinner and a sleep over. That was about 7 years ago.<br />
<br />
This trip was more of an adult get-away with fine food, a boat trip, train ride, and almost a seaplane flight. Late planning fail on my part. Not to worry. I'm already looking into it for my next trip.<br />
<br />
For the ultimate in convenience and old time charm, I stayed in the <span style="font-size: large;"><a href="http://www.lakeside-inn.com/">Lakeside Inn </a></span>right on Lake Dora. The boat, train, and seaplane are right on the doorstep and all of downtown is just across the train tracks. The staff is the friendliest I've experienced in a long time and yes I made 10 separate trips to Disney in the last year so my standards are pretty high.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEio38Rt2uNRyCS5j4kyjpb_kQZp1ZPk5wgRt5ohff0LGPxwn3USTa_85zEZk0kJXvwGpbm6B6VnTrH4hdE09iuSFp1VOQIhyb5XT-srZyz9o9Z2Ye_CZfgNCH7jZRAZGRbjNnVP5Rj0CDk/s1600/DSC_3955.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="190" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEio38Rt2uNRyCS5j4kyjpb_kQZp1ZPk5wgRt5ohff0LGPxwn3USTa_85zEZk0kJXvwGpbm6B6VnTrH4hdE09iuSFp1VOQIhyb5XT-srZyz9o9Z2Ye_CZfgNCH7jZRAZGRbjNnVP5Rj0CDk/s320/DSC_3955.jpg" width="320" /></a><br />
<br />
The biggest problem I had was picking a restaurant. That happened no less than 6 times and every time was a winner. We even found a great coffee/ice cream shop and a hidden away wine bar. There was live music scattered around the town but honestly I was not a fan of much of it. Still very enjoyable to sit and give a listen with a beer in hand and not a care in the world in my head. That was pretty much the goal of this trip and it was mission accomplished for 3 days.<br />
<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjcIN61JrRfOKIsXpkv598-K7Ue4Kjp92gBluVQ1g0kUalk92oVr5mm8upIguIibIdn80x6SPUtV86paJwPTmUxxgKIWmKPhweEG9LTtb5DYY9ee3bmD7DvIsLDcG3a5Hk24GZOfNpCDpw/s1600/DSC_3958.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="236" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjcIN61JrRfOKIsXpkv598-K7Ue4Kjp92gBluVQ1g0kUalk92oVr5mm8upIguIibIdn80x6SPUtV86paJwPTmUxxgKIWmKPhweEG9LTtb5DYY9ee3bmD7DvIsLDcG3a5Hk24GZOfNpCDpw/s320/DSC_3958.jpg" width="320" /></a><br />
While I was there I learned of a <span style="font-size: large;"><a href="https://www.evensi.us/steampunk-industrial-show-renningers-mount-dora-flea-market/168524544">Steam Punk</a></span> festival which I missed but I did attend the <span style="font-size: large;"><a href="http://www.orlandosentinel.com/news/lake/os-lk-rifles-rail-tavares-20160919-story.html">Rifles and Rails</a></span> event. In talking with some of the Civil War re-enactors, I found there is a much larger event in my own area. There are events all through the year which will be bringing me back to Mount Dora.<br />
<br />
One of the great things, all throughout our stay we had conversations with people we just met. No one was texting, they were talking. It's just one of those places where people put their phones down and just live. Probably why it's taken me so long to post in my blog. Oh - and stay for the sunset. It happens every night like clockwork and it is definitely something to write home about. <br />

If you have never heard of it, here's the link to <span style="font-size: large;"><a href="https://www.pine64.com/">PINE64</a>. </span>I read about this project earlier in the year and it sounded interesting. I've now had mine several weeks and I have spent a lot more time with it than I expected. Some full days actually.<br />

<br /></div>
<div>
A little about my background. I started my computer career as a COBOL programmer in 1980 but prior to that I bought a Commodore Vic 20. The first $300.00 computer you didn't have to assemble yourself. It was basically a computer inside a keyboard that required a TV as a display and a tape recorder to store programs. After I took that as far as I could, I bought a $5,000 IBM XT with 10MB hard drive and 512k ram. It cost more than my car. But it came with a programming language called BASIC and I spent untold hours writing programs.<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Since then I've tested and implemented all sorts of Mainframe, PC, peripheral equipment, datacom, networking, wireless, and mobile computing. I get a certain joy out of learning new systems and conquering new challenges. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
If you have been following my blog you are probably thinking "Hey - I thought you retired!" True but it's hot right now in Florida, rains every day, and I'm in that little area where the algae bloom has made national news so I have some time to kill in the AC. Also, considering all the equipment I've seen over the years - this little board is amazing. I've seen very mixed reviews though. If your first introduction to computing was an iPhone, well then the PINE64 possibly won't impress you that much. If you burned out a soldering iron during your career, this board will simply blow you away. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjbvCeeXNOi47sBKCz3w_Ci7uyvQQv88x2WdmoB_5155tqytuCWgNG5AAOIiYFtmLow8bhs7AXDaP0Lh8XqaaxbrtHWjxO3Y3kpFF3FcNfpDGs3PGO9YCQ4OE1LyE8RlerjKndvH-37M20/s1600/Pine64.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="238" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjbvCeeXNOi47sBKCz3w_Ci7uyvQQv88x2WdmoB_5155tqytuCWgNG5AAOIiYFtmLow8bhs7AXDaP0Lh8XqaaxbrtHWjxO3Y3kpFF3FcNfpDGs3PGO9YCQ4OE1LyE8RlerjKndvH-37M20/s400/Pine64.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
I opted for the $89 package. If I did it again I may have not gone with the LCD but I did enjoy the challenge of getting it to work. Based on many comments I saw out there, very few people know how to research but sure know how to complain. It took me less than 20 minutes to know what my problem was. I made a few simple videos to help out anyone willing to suffer through them but they may save you a bit of time deciding if this device is for you. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
One thing I learned in my career - there is always someone smarter than you who already has the answer. In the old days it was face to face, user groups, long distance phone calls, message boards on dial in modems, software on floppies sent through the mail. 99% of the time you are looking for answers, 1% of the time you have them and are only too happy to share. Now days, 5 minutes on the internet and done. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
In a nutshell, I really like the PINE64. I've have zero problems other than a few unexpected reboots after I've loaded new applications. I had the screen shimmer once. My unit came with Android but I tested Ubuntu and Remix OS as well. I'm more comfortable with Remix OS but I think it needs refining. It was the glitchiest. On my board - the most powerful option you can buy for now, I found Ubuntu the slowest but not by much. The Android was the clear winner for me. I had no problem downloading apps and both the HDMI and LCD versions worked with no hangups. From reading others complaints, the biggest culprit seemed to be random power supplies. Always match the power supply exactly to the specs of the machine. Computing 101 and often ignored when equipment gets moved and people just stick in what fits. Yes - I managed a Helpdesk too. If you have the time, check out my videos. I'm going the spend the next couple of weeks writing my own apps. If it goes badly or gets too frustrating, I can always go back to retiring. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
If you are just starting to look into a computer career or maybe as an Android App builder - you may want to invest. If this little board frustrates you, computing might not a good fit. I personally think this is the beginning of a total revolution in the industry and I wanted to be part of it. Just like when I was a user of Delphi and ARPNET thinking the internet might be big one day if there was only some content worth viewing. Or when the only use for Wifi was to move files between laptops faster than the optical port and thinking if only there was way to connect to the network with no wires. I have been fortunate to have worked in an industry that has made epic changes during my time. I've not coded in a very long while but I bought this device to see if I can write even one app for it. My goal is to transfer it to the PINE64 on a USB and run it. If you have already, feel free to comment.<br />

I don't often tread the same ground in my travels. I like to see new things more often than not. That said, I had a very strong desire to <span style="font-size: large;"><a href="http://www.seerockcity.com/">See Rock City</a> </span>one more time. I was nearing the end of a six week travel trip and I can honestly say, this was not on the way. More like 900 miles out of the way. Due to flooding on my intended route home from Texas I decided to drive a slightly more northern route. Then I very unexpectedly shot straight into the mountains. I arrived very late near Chattanooga TN.<br />

<br />
I would like to mention for those who may have forgotten - I'm from Florida. All our roads are straight and level and the entire state is lit like New Year's Eve in Times Square. About 9:00 PM in the pitch black mountains, in the rain, was pretty much my limit on thrill rides. I found myself taking hairpin turns and drastic elevation changes. I was pretty far from where I wanted to be but a hotel presented itself in the mist so I went for it.<br />

<br />
The next morning I woke up in the most beautiful place, mountains all around, a light mist, and no plan for the day. Did I mention I lost phone connection for the last 50 miles of my trip. I can not even remember the last time that happened and I've owned a cell phone since they came out. I use that phone to make every major decision these days and without it I can even drive from point A to B.<br />

<br />
With a little wifi at the breakfast bar, I discovered I was pretty near Rock City. I was last there in 1978 when I took my parents then later in 1990 or so. I have very strong memories of the place. Happy times. In my mind I had a vivid image. I decided that was to be my destination - a walk in the park and down memory lane.<br />
<br />
<script async="" charset="utf-8" src="https://embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<a data-flickr-embed="false" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/wolfbyte999/27407186632/in/album-72157668955041392/" title="DSC_3792"><img alt="DSC_3792" height="427" src="https://c1.staticflickr.com/8/7533/27407186632_304f1c2161_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
When I arrived I found parking for hundreds of cars and mine was the only one. It seemed I was there an hour before they opened. I had no idea, just thought it was a slow day, but since I was carrying a couple of professional cameras, they sold me a ticket a little ahead of schedule and let me in. I had the entire park to myself.<br />

<br />
Memories are a funny thing. I know Rock City has expanded a bit since the 90's but not that much. It's all rock. As huge as it was in my mind, it was vast in person. I do not remember the suspension bridge but in my youth I had a horrible fear of heights. I thought of that as I bounced across and even stopped in the middle to shoot photos, then walked back across as if it were a sidewalk.<br />

<br />
Life moves so fast and changes so much. My parents can no longer make the journey let alone enjoy this amazing place. But I remember walking these paths with them. Re-walking these paths I remember more of my previous visits. This was but one stop of many but for Mom and Dad I brought back plenty of photos. It will be fun to compare them to the old photos albums.<br />

I think these photos very nicely sum up my four week trip to Texas. Water and flooding everywhere I went except for the one place I really wanted it. <span style="font-size: large;"><a href="http://tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/mckinney-falls">McKinney Falls State Park</a></span>. Well - more like the time. It absolutely poured rain and hail stones the very next day. But I was 100 miles up the road.<br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="false" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/wolfbyte999/27226733630/in/album-72157666809001293/" title="DSC_3452"><img alt="DSC_3452" height="427" src="https://c7.staticflickr.com/8/7726/27226733630_57ac99792a_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
I met a very nice park ranger who let me know there was some tremendous flooding not too long before and most of the park was closed. There was a large welcome center nearby that was still closed because of the water damage she said. Nearby as in these lovely dry rocks would have been 25 feet below the water line.<br />
<br />
<script async="" charset="utf-8" src="https://embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<a data-flickr-embed="false" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/wolfbyte999/26894131954/in/album-72157666809001293/" title="DSC_3449"><img alt="DSC_3449" height="427" src="https://c3.staticflickr.com/8/7722/26894131954_bdcbe11b92_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
This mere trickle is nothing compared to the photos I had seen of the falls so imagine my disappointment. To photograph a roaring torrent of water would have a dream come true. That's not to say I didn't have a good time. The ranger let me know there was a fairly strenuous hike along the water if I was up for it. Not a problem.<br />
<br />

<br />
Above is rock gouged out by fast moving water. The photo below is facing the other way. It's hard to get a sense of scale but there is a giant tree wedged into the branches of another giant tree at about the height I am standing. That would have taken a lot of water indeed.<br />

<br />
A little farther downstream there are tons upon tons of river rocks for miles. The power of nature is a wonderous thing. Even though I did not see a great falls, I still managed to get some great photos of rocks. And pebbles. Lots of pebbles.<br />
